This is a personal preference.
Do you like to be able to walk to buy your morning coffee, access to your hair cut, access to schools and most of your errands without a car? If so, then you'll prefer a residence with a high walk score. If you can't imagine a life where you don't get in your car for everything, then you'd prefer a low walk score.
My humble opinion is that for resale, walkability is going to become more important over the next few decades.
We prefer to do most of our errands on foot or at minimum have services clustered, but we also like to take the dawgs long wet walks without driving for hours. So, our home is in the medium walkability area and we're doing fine.

Hi Cathex,
Excellent question, but are you asking how you should factor it into your decision, or if there is a way to factor it into your search for a home? That is an area that is just not covered in the MLS, as it is such a difficult thing to quantify... much like "short commute." Much of the answer is in the eye of the beholder.
A good agent can help you narrow down your search if they have an excellent grasp of the area. The only real way to know is to go to the area and walk it.... sometimes even a map won't show it accurately. One idea is to use Google Earth... the layers and icons it has would likely help you in seeing what amenities and services are nearby. Also, I bet if you google urban planning, you would probably find some ideas for what makes an area "walkable."
If you need an agent in Annapolis, just let me know!
