How do I find a builder?

Profile picture for Shannon Cox
We moved to Wylie, TX from northern Utah 6 months ago.  We are leasing but are planning to buy a home when our lease runs out next summer.  We are also considering building.  I found a lot that I am very interested in. It is from a private owner so we would find our own builder.  I don't even know where to start or how to know if this is something we can even afford to do.  I know all about the lot but I have no idea what to do next.  Any advice?  Thank you so much!

Contact your local realtor if you have one. They should be able to recommend a good contractor.

Please be very diligent to check license, bond and referrals. Local RE agents can help to find a builder. Find a good attorney who knows how to draft a contract that will protect you in case of builder's default.

Call your local HBA - Home Builders Assoc - to obtain a list of licensed and bonded home builders. Then start the interview process to determine which builder suits your personaility. Ask friends for referrals. Also, ask some of the workers at your local Lowe's, Home Depot, or the local paint store.
