How do I find a home that has an in-law suite?

We need to bring a family member from another state here to CO.  I would like to streamline my search to look at homes or condos that have the provision to allow in-laws to live with us with privacy.

Thanks!! :)

Contact a local Agent to help you with your search as they can set up a search with the details that are important to you to help scale down your search to only properties that fit your needs.

I don't believe the local MLS in Northern Colorado has a search filter for in-law-suite.  This may require some leg work by your Realtor.  You can always type in a general search and hope that the listing agent put in-law-suite in the MLSscription.    I have found when you're looking for something like this and you're not sure about a property just go and see it.  I've sold many homes that MLS descriptions and photos don't paint the full picture.

Good Luck

The Denver MLS has a filter for "Carriage House" and one for "Mother-in-Law apartment" that can be added to a search by an agent.   Contact a well reviewed Zillow agent, and they can send you a current filtered list of applicable homes, from the MLS.

If you expand the house search form here on Zillow (expand "more filters") you will find keywords field. Type in-law suites and it will filter the search for you

Find out if the local MLS allows searches for "in law" suites, from a local broker.  I would doubt that there are any condo's that would fit your needs.

The answer is an agent...especially because the MLS offers more sophisticated searching.   BUT:

Sorry... I have to take exception to the first response which says that an agent "doesn't cost a thing".   Unfortunately, that is a very common misbelief because of the fact that the buy side agent is paid by the seller. However, that doesn't mean it's their money!    There is no deal without the buyer, and every seller takes the commissions into account when deciding the bottom line that they will accept.   SO, the BUYER PAYS for the commissions in my opinion!

This is not an advertizing forum. The answer is find a reputable agent. The tools and experience they have will save you countless hours and headaches. And as a buyer, I doesn't cost a thing. Try to find someone who answers your questions instead of giving you their contact information. If they can't read the Zillow rules, they might skip other steps too. Good luck

Your realtor can do a search for you and show you some options.

By all means, contact Allison (a local realtor). I can say that and I don't know her. Realtors have more search options and we can taylor a search that only shows homes/condo's with in-law suites.

The services of a buyers agent are free for the buyers. We receive our commission from the sellers proceeds. It will cost you nothing for Allison to send/show you listings that meet your criteria. Then I'm sure she will assist in the buying process - purchase agreement, inspections, financing, negotiations, proper addendums, title work and closing. A good agent can save you time and money!

Good luck, you are doing a good thing by bringing family to live with you.

You really need to contact a local real estate agent and they can help you streamline your search with up-to-date information on what is currently active on the market. I would be more than happy to help.
