Find the MLS in that area, most have online searches and search the street, see how many are for sale. Then use Google to do street views. You can about drive down the roads with virtual maps they have. Most places have local papers online.
This will give you an isea, but visiting will be better.

Chamber of Commerce is a good place to start, look at the schools, clubs and organizations. Call the police department and query them. Subscribe to the local newspaper or check the local newspaper website daily. If you need help with a Realtor referral, let us know.

You should also check with the local area Chamber of Commerce. They can supply you with a relocation guide and refer you to a realtor that knows the areas.

bestplaces.net is a good resource to get an overview on neighborhoods you are interested in. Just type in a city, town or zip code. Best of luck.

How do I find out about neighborhoods in other towns?
