To research the ownership name history, go to the County Clerks website. You will be able to search public records online to "trace" the prior owners.
Alternatively you can pay a title company a search fee and they'll deliver a report to you.

The County Assessor Office has quite a bit of info.

How do I find out information on my home of previous owners etc?
