If you are talking about a specific project you mentioned - moving a wall, any qualified contractor or architect will be able to let you know whether or not the wall can be removed with high degree of accuracy.
Ask your friends and neighbors who had large scale remodeling done. The link James Jacobs provided is good too.

http://architectfinder.aia.org/ This is a good place to start. You may have to interview several architects to find one with a style that is in keeping with your taste. good luck
How do I go about finding a good architect?
Also do you think a building architect may also be able to do a good job for a private home?
Also, how does an architect go about doing his job? For eg: I need to see if a wall can be removed between a living & a dining room. What tools does an architect typically bring along to see if there are beams on the wall or anything else it supports, etc?
Thanks
