You can work with a real estate professional. Not sure whether I understand what you mean about 'these prices being real'? If its a home for rent, be very careful as the home may be a foreclosure and the person renting scamming you. There are certain websites where scammers 'work it' Get an apartment in an apartment building, that would be safer.
You can check the ownership of a home by going into the public tax records and then ask the person you are renting from to show some identification reflecting their ownership that matches the tax records. Ask to speak to a former tenant too. Talk to the neighbors near the house also.Make sure the taxes are up to date (meaning paid)Ask that the last month and security go into a trust account.

Here's a good link from Zillow on scams and internet fraud.  It will help you understand "real".

good luck!

Always work with a professional to help you out. Go to apartment buildings and rent from them. With all the foreclosures and people in trouble, I would caution you, be very careful before handing a stranger a check

I would call a local agent or management company in your area. You need to be careful about listings that are not real. Some of those scammers will ask you to send depostits for keys and then run off with your money.

Ask people you know in you area if they know of good places to rent and then google the addresses to get reviews of the place for current and past tenants to check it out.
