How do I measure for a runner for a staircase?

Profile picture for Kaye Norenberg

I have decided put a runner on my staircase and have been looking at options online.  How do I measure for the right length for the staircase?

Use a piece of rope along the path where the runner will extend.   Then, measure the rope. Make sure the rope isn't stretchy.

If you are going to purchase online- measure carefully! Consider using the same pad if you are measuring the current condition.

If you are just doing research but plan on using a local company- they will come out and measure. I always do this in the case of carpet. They know their business and they know what margin to add to a final order to compensate for the new/existing padding, etc. Also, if they mess up the order- its on them to fix it. For stairs- its not that huge of a deal, but to recarpet a house- call in a pro for a measure.

Also, as a side note, some people don't realize this but the padding is really important. If you invest in a good pad, it will add a lot of life to your carpet in terms of wear, appearance, and overall performance.
