You can use Zillow as a rule of thumb but the best way to find out the value is to call experienced Realtor in your area who can run detailed CMA to compare value of your house with recent sold ones.

Call an experienced Realtor in your area and have them pull the most recent comparables in your community.  That is the most accurate way of finding the value of any property other than ordering an appraisal (which will cost you).  Most Realtors will not charge to pull up this data.

If you are wanting to sell your property on your own, your resource would be the the county tax records.  They are usually not as accurate however.  If you want to get more accurate numbers, only a REALTOR will have that answer simply because they have access to the MLS database where all sales in your neighborhood, and area, are recorded.  They also have access to a sophisticated tax system that can pull all homes sold in the MLS and local county tax records to give you a more accurate look at the market.

If you are buying and want to know the value of the house, this is the same homework you'd have to do alone, or with a Realtor.  The MLS is a somewhat secret society of its own, and only Realtors have access.

You can still attempt selling your home on your own by doing your research.  But after some time on the market without a sale, I would highly recommend hiring a Realtor.  And if the commission is the issue, you might want to consider working with a Realtor that will negotiate their commission.

Good luck!

Actually Zillow is a good source or if you are considering selling or buying ask for a CMA from a real estate professional.

This will be a value based on  recent comparable sales in the area close to you home.

You may want to contact a local realtor to assist you with finding out property values.
