How do you repair a stripped hot water knob/gear?

I have a hot/cold faucet in my garage.  To turn on the hot water, you must push the handle in, to engage something, then turn the as normal.  Someone stripped the gear(?) and I can't use the hot water tap.  How is this repaired?
Thanks, Bruce

How old is your faucet?  Was it originally designed to be pushed in first before turning?

Can you turn off the water to the home and remove the core (cartridge)?
Take that to a plumbing supply store and get a replacement.
