Zestimates are calculated using a algorithm with public data (including past sales and tax value) adjusted for some local rules.

You can read more about "what is a Zestimate?" as well as Data Coverage and Zestimate Accuracy.

Some people don't mind the concept of a starting point for comparison of property, some abhor the idea.

The short answer is very badly. They describe their algorithm with lots of fluff about it being a 'starting point' as if they are talking down expectations, but then refuse all right of appeal by the homeowner who questions the accuracy of the zestimate. If Zillow had a track record of accuracy it would be half tolerable but they are lousy at valuing single family homes, especially those that are none standard. Additionally they demonstrate very poor data integrity with the information they buy from 3rd party suppliers to feed into their flawed zestimate algorithm. You can probably guess that I am not a big fan of Zillow based on my personal experience.
