Dear Bouzer:
Good question, although supposing you mean theoretically?

By the way I commend the person that keeps from using credit for everyday purchases, although the "points" offered to buy groceries and gasoline through credit cards is a benefit. Everyone in our society owes for something, unless they are a mountain man living off the fat of the land.

People owe for phone, utilities, rent, medical, insurance and other necessities. They all go to build your credit score. The credit score is further built by credit purchases.

In any case, if you have lived on your own, you have a credit score.

If you are looking to buy your first home, do not hesitate to contact me and we can discuss further. Regards, Jeff

capital one will give practically anyone a card... they gave my mom one only a few weeks after she filed for bankruptcy(she named them).

most banks have a card for "students". they won't actually check your enrollment status, it doesn't depend so much on pre-established credit history or employment history to get the card.

the if you have a "history" with a bank, many of them will give you a card if you have many months showing an increasing savings(or one that doesn't slip negative) over a 6 month period... sometimes.

Credit rating is based on payment history; not on whether you owe money.  If you own no money and have income and assets, your rating is usually higher than if you have debt.  Don't take on debt just to get a credit rating.

Credit cards should be for "convenience", nothing else.  Never let a balance accumulate.

Presumably, you're trying to get your credit established so that you can get a credit history.

Assume you don't have a history....as long as you have a job, you may qualify for at least one credit card, or more

Charge a few items on the card.

Upon receipt of your first statement, make a payment. You don't have to pay it off (yet). Then two weeks later, make a second payment even though your next statement isn't due yet. Supposedly, this "pings" he credit card and shows activity.

Activity  --- charges and payments --- are tracked.

The following month, do it again. Make a few purchases and charge them to your card.....then make payments, leaving a small balance in the account.

I used to pay off my credit cards and thought I'd get a good score. I did get a good score...but it was only when I left some balances but continued my payments on the cards did my credit score improve to over 800. Go figure!

The question starts out a little vague, but let's address a few of the initial concerns.  Pull up your credit report(s) on www.annualcreditreport.com.  This is the free web site that allows you to pull up your report once a year per Credit Reporting Agency.  You can do all three now, or you can pull up one every 4 months.  Don't pay for any of the credit scores (numbers) or anything else special.  Just get your report for free and take a look at it.

Do you have previously established credit?  The credit reports will show that.  Now, let's take the extreme measure - you have no previously established credit.  You could talk to your bank that may have your checking or savings account.  You could request a secured loan or a secured credit card.  These are two simple ways to begin to establish credit.

Even though you don't 'owe anyone' - you may have had credit established in the last few years that will continue to show on your report (up to 7 years, I think).  Hence, student loans may be there or even a paid off car loan.  So, not owing any money does not close your credit report.

Could you detail the question more for a more exact answer?  Thanks.
