How is the job market in this area? My husband is a carpenter and I am a 9-1-1 dispatcher

We are in our early sixties and are looking at a warmer climate. Have no intention of retirement in near future. Want to work as long as we can providing health holds out. Son and daughter-in-law are in early thirties and they want to move out there with us. We would be looking for two separate homes. They have a teenage son

consider Florida.  Home prices, values and the quality of life  have never been better.
Consider that your son and daughter-in-law could make an earlier move to pave the way for you. Educational opportunites for teen age son and parents.  Superior pay and opportunities now in the health care field....one speciality is for male nurses..... one benefit is the pay and global opportunities.

Some good honest advice below.  I wish I could be more upbeat but the job situation is the worst it has been in years.  Arizona used to have one of the lowest unemployments rates in the country.  Now, we are floating somewhere around 10%.  Arizona flourished in the boom years where our population soared and construction and real estate soared with it.
The truth is that it is tough everywhere.  Other cities aren't fairing much better.  Phoenix is a huge city, you'll be able to find something.  My advice is to start looking early.   Good luck to you.

Very tough. I think Jan Brewer stated our unemployment rate was just over 10% which is higher than the national average. Start looking before you come to Phoenix and have at least 10 interviews lined up. Retirement is in the near future no matter how you look at it. Sun City is a master planned city/community that has many "age restricted" communities. Despite the political correctness of this term, the Sun City area is very nice. They have Wal-greens in every community and is by far the only place I would ever want to retire. They have more than enough golf courses and amenities to keep active at any age. Depending on the community they may or may not allow a resident at sons age. However, I'm sure he'll be going to college so living within 20 miles of ASU in Tempe might be more preferred so Sun City could be out of the question.

Unfortunately the job market in Arizona stinks.  As a 911 dispatcher, you may be able to catch on with one of the cities or county, but I would wait until you find a job before moving.  You do not want to end up living in Gilbert and working in Buckeye (or even Phoenix).

As a carpenter your husband could probably find work as a handyman, remodeler, etc.  Building is hurting pretty bad, but if you are flexible you can find work.
