well, like everything else it depends, but for instance:

RN (base) salaries 50-65k+
Radiology tech 38-45k+
Physical Therapy 45k-65k+

these are substantially LOWER than the reported salaries for 98031(King County, Wa which I used as an example earlier

RN (base) salaries 70k-90k+
Radiology tech 45k-55k+
Physical Therapy 55k-85k+

these numbers may reflect a depressed labor market or other factors though (like the fact that we have some really great medical facilities around here.) I can't comment specifically on wages or jobs availible in hawaii.

Minimum wage in HI is 7.25   which appears below average as well. here in Wa, its 9.04

the average adjusted gross income is $39,246

for more info, I'll refer you to City-data.com

Salaries are not higher even in health care in HI and the cost for things like gas, groceries and household items is high. People choose to live in Hawaii for the quality of life, natural beauty and the pace, but they often sacrifice a higher salary or income to do it.

If you are looking for a deal in HI, you have to move away from the employment centers to more rural areas and learn to pay more than you would on the mainland for everyday items.

Thank you for all the information! I know this is not real estate related, but is income level also higher and to the same extend as cost of living is? I mean it sounds logical for it to be. Let say a health care profession for instance.

Debra said it right. It depends on where you live here. My brother-in-law purchased a small house in Honolulu for close to 500k. One thing the house has is water views! To me, it is a great price for water views. They had to gut the house but it was well worth it. He loves it there and has no plans on moving back. His son is moving there in March. He graduated from college and landed a job while visiting. I hope this helps.

Its not renting and owning, its the cost to import everything from the mainland.

I'd put home prices in the same ball park as king county wa, eg minimum entry point near 200k, average closer to 270k, desirable locations start at 500k on up. Condos available for less ~80k.

Sperling has a cost of living calculator here where you can compare the cost fir housing, insurance etc between two places. Hawaii is expensive. Both buying and renting.

since "a lot" is a rather vague answer with nothing to back it up...........hopefully an agent from Hawaii will come along who can give you a real sense of the cost of living...and some concrete information.

Hawaii is made up of  many islands so I am sure the answer will  also vary depending on what island you are referencing.

I have a client who lived in Hawaii for many years, and hopes to move back........ she told me just the other day that  the cost of living there was no different than my area in NJ.

One can buy a studio apartment in NYC for $700,000....or a 1 br condo in W Palm Beach, Fl,  for $12,000...............none of which has any relevance to  the question posted.

A lot. Of course if you look at places like washington dc or new york city they are horrendous also.

I have seen houses with 40 acres for well under $200k. I even saw one house with 40 acres for sale in nowhere AR for under $100k. How much would that cost even in the cheapest place in Hawaii?

In Hawaii the real problem is everything gets shipped there by boat and is very expensive compared to other states. Even if the cost of a house was identical the cost of living would be much higher.
