How much will vinyl siding improve my homes value?

My home has old pink brick (60's) and two additions which are different colors. (ugly) Will it be worth putting siding all around the home to improve the value before a sale?
(we won't have labor costs, b/c my husband can do the job himself).

Vinyl siding is ugly and not very green.  This material will be in our landfills in 20 years!!!  No good!!

Vinyl siding will look nice for many years andis definately the way to go for those who want a low maintenance exterior. On high end homes in our area it is frowned upon as being "cheap" But most mid-priced homes (500k)  it is a nice feature.

If you are going to install it yourself..do it correctly. It is almost always a deal breaker if I find problems (usually moisture) with siding installation. Most DIYers make errors installing the trim elements and flashings so do your homework.

Painting or re-siding, is a decision you should investigate, evaluate, and make based on cost and local expectations.  Talk to local agents about what is most popular in your area.  But, if you are planning to sell, make sure your house has a consistent look and color.  Otherwise some buyers will drive up and drive away without getting out of the car.....and the people who are willing to get out of the car will be thinking about how low their offer should be before they step through the front door.  It is unlikely you will  recover the full cost of the improvement, but that low-ball offer is probably going to be a lot lower than the difference.

While it may not add value, it would definitely add to the homes curb appeal and make it easier to sell in the future.

We did my moms home many years ago after years and years of painting. For $3,000 in materials and the assistance of a skilled handyman, we no longer have to paint her home every five years, which is worth every penny.
