How should or how do you expect a real estate agent to dress?

There is much talk about the dress of real estate agents.  Should they dress professional (coat/tie for men, pant suit for women) or are slacks with a pressed shirt ok?  How about jeans?  Lets hear it from everyone....agents, brokers, customers/clients?  Does it really make a difference who you pick as an agent based on how they dress?

As many have already stated, it depends. It depends on the clients, the situation, weather and the agent. I've been a full time agent since 2002 and I don't think I've ever worn a suit/tie except in the photo you see. I've had a number of people comment upon meeting me that they were glad I wasn't in a suit/tie but I routinely wear jeans and/or slacks. The critical part for me is all shirts - mostly wear polos - pullovers/windshirts/coat/etc. everything is embroidered with the REMAX balloon. It's part of my branding. I think every agent - and every person for that matter - should have their own personal style that reflects their personality and take pride in it.

Profile picture for Dunes....
I like Rushel's answer..but I'm biased I'm an Oregonian

I once had a Lady Agent show me an 8plex under construction..she wouldn't get out of the Car because of her shoes..looked nice but
When I did look at other properties & did buy she wasn't my Agent....blew that! lol

Once had a Male who didn't know about and wouldn't look at Water Damage in an attic because of his suit....He lost out also

Don't care what you wear but do care about what you say and do

For an open house, I wear a sport coat and tie. For showings, I dress for the property, client or weather. I recently showed a million dollar foreclosed property and wore jeans, button down shirt, winter coat and heavy shoes ... client was derssed similar to me. Glad I wasn't "dressed up" when I pushed his car out of a snow bank!

I usually wear a dress button down shirt and clean pressed slacks.

I've asked myself that question in the past. When I first started in this business I was told by my BIC that he expected me to wear slacks, buttoned down shirts and a tie year round. I found myself in an ackward state. People that knew me knew it wasn't me if you get my drift.

After a year of trying it I developed the Superman Clark Kent syndrom. When I had on my tie I felt like a different person. I didn't feel myself and I truly believe it hurt my business. One day I took off the tie, changed my pants, and put my boots back on and I felt whole again.
Moral of the story: Be yourself, but be professional. I dont wear jeans to work often but when I do they are nice. But I do wear my boots everyday. It helps people (customers) understand I'm just like them.

Yes, people will judge you by the way you dress.
This is a great question, and I believe that every area is different.  Here in Bandon, OR, I show a lot of very rural properties alongside townhomes.  I see successful local agents dress in jeans daily, and who wear ball caps at all times.  This works for them - they have a loyal customer base, and are able to walk brushy property lines and put up their own 'for sale' signs on a moment's notice. They do tuck their shirts in, and never look sloppy.
I wear a skirt or slacks most days, but when I have a very rural or oceanfront property to show, I change into khaki's or denim and sturdy shoes - heels just don't work in that situation.
Dress according to what your day's work requires, and always have a change of clothes ready!

Totally depends on the market and the weather.  My wardrobe ranges from suits and cufflinks with wing-tips, to shorts and a golf shirt.  Casual is best in a resort atmosphere...and in the summer, its certainly better to dress down than be in a soaking-wet suit.

I agree with it being too warm in the summer for hose as well as coat and tie for men.  I do, however, believe we still need to dress as professionally as possble. I think properly fitting, not too revealing clothing is a must!

I do believe that dressing appropriately gives the impression of professionalism.  However in the summer sun in Florida it is hard to be getting in and out of your car showing property dressed up in heels and hose!  I do think that there are alot of more casual clothes that is well appropriate for our temperatures.

I don't think that jeans are appropriate nor shorts.
