How to accurately estimate a house replacement cost?

I need to estimate my house's replacement cost.  The insurance company just sent me a notice of increasing the amount of the house replacement value and insurance premium significantly.  Thus, I need to find my own replacement cost to make sure that they are not charging me because business reasons.

Any suggestions where to start getting an estimate?

Appreciate any helpful leads or hints.

For a ball-park number, you might try the site:

But you still need to know how to answer the questions appropriately.

Insurance companies want to make sure you have enough insurance to cover a loss if it is total... but if you buy "too much" insurance, it won't help you as you can't get them to cover construction costs for more than you had, except for required "code upgrades".

I hear this question all of the time - but I dont understand why an insurance company can not do it for you, as their replacement value is unique. You wouldnt contact an appraiser, those figurest would be wrong. Not sure about a contractor either.

I might consider talking to another insurance person and ask...
