... still looks bad when a person looks at a listing that has a price higher than zillow - who is to say they won't pass because of the calculations that zillow makes, that's a sale lost on something artificial.

50% of houses sell for less than the Zestimate, 50% sell more.     Yes, AVMs can complicate the issue and yes there is an educational process.   Fortunately buyers are getting smarter and actually reading a number of the FAQs such as "what is a Zestimate?" so are keeping them in perspective more than they were a few years ago.

Of course, not all.  That is part of the reason an owner's estimate with justification for a higher asking price can be helpful.

Current market value and Zestimates are often different.  Zestimates are not supposed to be market values.
