'Ya know zzhh stinkin' badges are just that. I recall a professor in College that was a moron, by any standards. I say this a preface to saying you do NOT need and exclusive buyer's agent. You need an agent that is an excellent buyer's agent. Whether or not they take listings is irrelevant - think about it.
If you like I can do a referral for you, any agent can, but it is in your best interest to locate your own. I recommend that you interview from a few to a lot until you meet with someone who is intelligent, honest, diligent and has rapport with you. It IS work but that work will probably return more for you than any other part of the transaction.
I do NOT recommend depending on references from friends and family because I have experienced that folk will recommend whoever they have worked with as long as that agent hasn't kicked them in the face - too hard. That's not good enough, you want the best. Check out those referrals because it will save you time but do NOT depend on them - you need to decide.
OR you can "trust me". Either me or some other agent arbitrarily chosen. Obviously I don't recommend that.
There is a world of opportunity in Stockton now, my hometown, best fortune. RSVP if you need help.

George Black should get a best answer rating, on his third post. He actually answered the question.
The ABR designation, is bought, more than earned. If you can find a CRS, that is also an "Exclusive Buyer's Agent", that may carry some value.
Just remember it is a brave new world out there, and nobody "knows" anything.

I would recommend speaking with friends, family members and co-workers to get recommendations. Someone can have all the desigations out there and not necessarily be able to effectively represent you. There is nothing like knowing someone else who has had a good experience with an agent and can vouch for their knowledge, dedication and loyalty--something you can't get from a class. When you get some names, interview the agent and see if they are a good fit with your personality. If you don't get along well, it won't work.

Stockton as been one of the worse hit very hard with the subprime fiasco. Chose a buyers' agent that is proficent with foreclosures. You have lots of choices. Ed is right about the designations, however your needs will probably be with an agent that A) Knows Stockton VERY well, B) Knows REO's even better. (Not me)
Don't bother with a short sale in Stocton.

Speak to your firends and family members for a referral to a qualified, competent and experienced agent. Then meet with the agent and find out if your personalities are a good fit for working and interacting with each other. Find out the agent's credentials especially for continued training and development with designations. The agent you select should be an ABR (Accredited Buyer's Agent) and for even more experience seek out a CRS, Certified Residential Specialist. Only 4% or all agents in the USA have the CRS designation.

I would seek out an agent with both the credentials ABR (memeber of the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council) and a CRS, Certified Residential Specialist. Look for one that specializes in the area where you want to purchase. You should also talk to your friends and family members who have purchased or sold real estate in the recent past. You may find that the best agent, like many professionals, will be found by referral. Good Luck!

Look for the designation ABR or CBR. The agent should belong to the REBAC Council.http://www.rebac.net/MembershipDirectorySearch.aspx

No disrespect Scott, but do you really represent buyers across the massive state of California?
I limit my activities to about 2 counties in the Twin Cities area. To imply that I could give meaningful representation even 50 miles from my home area would be doing a disservice to a home buyer.
P.S. Your posting violates Zillows Terms Of Service (the link to your website). If someone wants to contact you, they can find you through your Zillow profile.
Good luck and welcome to Zillow.

Funny you should ask. I represent Buyers Statewide. Do you have any specific questions that I can answer here? Or are you looking for a referral.
Most Agents concentrate on Listings as they are simpler and more profitable because once you have the listing you are going to get paid. Buyers may or may not buy and a lot of time is spent driving them around with no guarantee of a sale (thus a commision).
Buyers agents are usually newbies trying to crack the business and build clientelle. There is nothing wrong with using them, they have plenty of time to dedicate to you and are supervised by their broker.
[self-promotional post, removed bymoderator] Since more and more Buyers are lfinding their own properties and only require representation when a home is located, it reduces the inefficiency of representing Buyers. I would be glad to talk to you and see if our services fit your needs.

Find a local Exclusive Buyer Agent by contacting NAEBA.org, the national trade organization for exclusive buyer agents.
The zillow directory is a great resource for finding real estate professionals. Interview at least 3 buyer agents before you decide. Good luck...
