An agent screens you, but there is nothing against screening the agent. Request him or her to show any licenses and ID you like. This way you show how serious you are about renting. If an agent does not want to comply with showing his credentials, then don't rent it. Don't rely on a business card only - it proves nothing.

Realtors screen people and not actually work with people. I had one realtor that did not like us cause we were black and she repeatedly kept saying that there is a background check. I am studying neuropsychology at a major university so I can teach college, not sell drugs. Many owners do not realize that realtors are the reason their properties stay for a very long time without renting. If there is one realtor that can prove me wrong, my email address is vperrydallas@yahoo.com.

By Owner Rentals can be found in local papers, craigslist, zillow, & by sign. Pick a neighborhood then start your search.  It would be much easier to find a realtor & check out local mls website in your area, there is no additional fee to you if you use an agent the home owner will have to pay a modest fee for your representation.  With no cost to you please seek representation from a local realtor or rental company in your area.

Rental scams do abound.  A colleague of mine actually had to have a separate sign made for one of his listings, reading "this home is NOT for rent" because of repeated clashes with people who had been sucked in by a rental scam.

Cynthia:
As previously stated you can certainly check in Zillow or Craigslist ads. You can also drive around the neighborhood you prefer. Beware!

1) There are rental scams of people claiming the property is theirs, taking the money and never again to be seen; or
2) You run the  possibility of renting a property that is in foreclosure; or
3 )Paying higher rent than comparables properties in the area; or
4) Not having a lease or if you do have one, it favors the Landlord. Have an attorney review your lease.

I respect you reason for not choosing a  Realtor to assist. Just be careful.

Zillow is a great place to start and craigslist is a good place to check as well! Happy home hunting!
