NARI is an excellent suggesting and there are other associations and remodel sub associations that are good. There is also http://203kcontractors.com/ and http://www.nhscontractorsnetwork.com/ that provide some contractors that they have screened and I don't think either one of them charge a fee for the contractor to be listed but I'm not absolutely sure of that.

Asking friends is good.  Asking other contractors for who they recommend is also good.  My favorite online site is Angieslist.com.  It is based solely on the reviews of other customers and it's very objective.  They even screen all the reviews.  My customers love this site.  You do need to pay for a subscription ($35 for the year or $15 for 1 month) but it's worth it!  And, you can use for many different areas - contractors, doctors, realtors, lots of things.

One way is by word of Mouth. If people trust someone they will give them a compliment by referral. Most times you would want to see some of the work to make sure it is the same scope of work as your project. then go from there. Check the BBB for more research on the type of company it is, there are many different contractors who specialize in different fields

Also consider www.NARI.org the National Association for the Remodeling Industry. A very good group.

Good Luck!
