What platform do you view it in? I usually use Hootsuite.com so that I can set up columns to help with my viewing. I also don't follow thousands of peeps.

I don't know about Hootsuite.com, I will check it out. I did find that some of the people who wanted me to follow them are telemarketer types and I did hide them.

One way we use Twitter is by going to geochirp.com, there you can look for tweets in your geographical area and narrow it down by keyword. Want to see who tweets the word "realtor" "real estate" "home buying" etc... in your area? Find someone like that, send them a direct message "maybe I could help".

You can also use Tweetdeck to view tweets, and subscribe to various topics. Use search.twitter.com to find conversations about topics that interest you -- and slowly start to engage in those discussions already happening (and then following the people you are conversing with).
