Hmmmm... my neighborhood is 95/100 and I live in Los Angeles. This can't be right!!! This is LA, where if you don't own a car, you're an outcast.

I'm 28/100, yet everything (i.e. grocery store w/strip mall, gas station, starbucks, couple restaurants, etc) is no further than 2.68 miles away! They must have Flip and I confused!

Wow, what a great tool! Thanks for posting about it again, as I missed it the first time around.
My neighborhood ranked 42 out of 100 — Car-Dependent
In Nashville many things are sort of spread out, however the metro transit has some good help in the form of bus routes that go to suburb areas and then downtown several time a day as well as a train that goes to near by towns etc.
Thanks again~

I only scored a 24 but the local strip mall is only about a mile away. And this is CA so I could just use a shopping cart to get all my stuff home.
When I was growing up we had a family owned grocery/convenience store right around the corner in the middle of a residential area. You could get just about anything there except hardware. Grade school was 1/2 mile one direction jr. high 1/2 mile the other direction. I was to young to remember where the high school or gas station was, but the entire city was within riding distance on my bike. That neighborhood rates a 65, or somewhat walkable, even though nothing is more than .76 miles away.
Somewhere in the last 30 years they have gotten away from building the subs with what you need outside of housing. Maybe the rise in fuel prices will reinvent that.

Most of the streets in my town don't have sidewalks so if you walk you will get hit by a car.

My town scored 89...But, we live 3 miles out and you won't catch me walking a two lane, gently curving mountain highway to get to town. I wouldn't even ride a bike...the shoulder sometimes disappears.

54/100 for my pad in Oxnard,Ca. We walk evreywhere, there are 2 shopping centers with grocrey stores etc. within a mile walk from our house, so I think it should be a bit highter.

89 in SoCal, 72 in the North East. The old location in NorCal is an 86. I'd say it's a reasonable stab at it, quantity (outside of a yes/no) / quality doesn't seem to be a factor, but interesting.

The neighborhood in Boston that I'm moving out of tomorrow scores a 95, though I would say that it's as close to perfect as you'll get. My wife and I have shared a car for almost 7 years now (which was more impressive when we were engaged and lived 25 miles apart).

My neighborhood scored a 22 with everything but the library less then a mile away, except the library which they calculated at 3.42 miles away. Problem is they used a branch of the city library instead if my towns library which is at most 1/2 mile away from my house.
Obviously there are still kinks to be worked out.

72 here (Pasadena, CA).
Makes sense, pretty much do walk everywhere. My two gas guzzlers rarely get used.

Old neighborhood (where we couldn't sell our house, and gas is $4.29/gal) = 89 "Very Walkable" and we have nice new sidewalks and newly paved street AND the bus line is 2 short blocks away AND my job was under 2 miles away
New neighborhood (where we rent and gas is $4.69/gal) = 29 "Car Dependent" figures! The only thing within reasonable walking distance is the microbrew-pub - at least that's as far as we've ever walked ;-)

94 out of 100 walkable for the condo I bought six months ago in Pasadena. Don't tell anyone, but that's is precisely why I bought it. If you live in it, you don't need a car at all, which I figure will become an increasing asset as transportation expenses keep rising. That's probably where I'll live when I am too old to drive.

Make that 8 months ago. Time really flies when you are having fun.
I love this site, we actually wrote about it on Zillow Blog in June.

Great site! I am 32 car-dependent. I've always thought of my house as "near lots of things" but they are all over 1 mile away and I see that the site counts things that are less than 1 mile away. And when I think about it, yeah, I drive my car the 1.5 miles to go to the supermarket. Not alot of sidewalks here. This will be a great tool when considering where next to live. Thanks.

Rob,
What are you talking about? I'm thanking sunnyview for posting the link to the walk-score thing.

How walkable is your neighborhood? Check out this site.
It looks like when I moved I went from a 17/100 neighborhood and to a whopping 35/100 walkscore neighborhood. I walk the kids to school now and am closer to work, but the site says I am still "car dependant" Sigh, I thought I was better off than that. Damn.
