Check out "Angies List".  It is the only list of service providers that the professionals must be recommended to get on.  It if full of contractors, specialists, and all kinds of professionals that people have given their feedback and reviews on....good & bad.

Check with Better Business Bureau see if there are any complaints and how long they have been in business.  You normally get what you pay for it.
Sign a contract and demand a warranty from workmanship(1 year , 2 year etc.)  Make sure it is permitted as your remodeling can be illegal making it hard to sell.

If your remodel job is extensive consult with an architect...they will be able to guide you through the entire project and recommend reputable contractors.  Good planning up front can save lots of money and hassle factor later!

What area do you live in?  If you aren't sure who to hire contact your local board of REALTORS and they should have names of contractors they have used in the past and some of the contractors may be affiliate members of their board

Take a look at restoration companies, they are slow this time of year and are used to keeping the costs down for the insurance companies.

There are reputable websites out there to find bonafide contractors. The best one ( which is who we deal with ) is service magic ( google search the name ) you simply fill out the required information and tell a little bit about your project and whala !!! up to 3 contractors who have passed the requirements for Service Magic will call or email you and set up appointments. Part of passing SM's requirements are up to date insurance with a minimum coverage of I think $1,000,000 , have good standing with SM customer reviews ( which you can read ) liscensing in the state and area of expertise. just to name a few. Beware of other sites that do not require the same as SM.
All of this is at no cost to you !! The contractor pays for the leads, so they are motivated to contact you and stay competative with their pricing. Try it out and I wish you all the Luck !!!

Hi dassikita,
The best way to find the right fit is to check references and look at their work.
You can go to my website and my Linkedin page for more info about my company.

I found numerous resources on this site for San Jose. One who gives good advice and has great pics is Raymond , Timber Creek Construction 30 yrs experience.  Type your zip in the search and click go. Then on "directory" tab at top put cursor and click San Jose home improvement.

Hi Dassikata,
I'm in Seattle so don't know anyone.

For starters, you can check out general contractors in San Jose who are in the Zillow professional directory.

Good luck with the remodel.
