I think it's funny that most everyone is answering "contact a realtor" first.

What you need to do is have a lender access your credit report.  Ask friends or family for a lender they've worked with (and was happy happy with the service provided) or go to the Directory here on Zillow and look up some with high customer service ratings.  If your credit isn't quite there to buy the lender should be able to give you an idea of what you'll need to do to eventually qualify for financing.

Jessie,

Speaking with a trusted lender is key in understanding you need and what you have in your credit profile. Many if not all realtors work with lenders who can connect you with a loan officer. You are in the right path in making a grat decision. Send me your contact info and I can send you a free copy of book called "My First Home" written by Keller Williams Realty Founder Gary Keller.

Dear Jessie; All experienced Realtors know the most reliable and trustworthy lenders.  We can give you the names and phone numbers of these experienced individuals. If you do not know any Realtors, ask you friends and relatives for the name of the Realtors that they have used and of whom they have a high opinion off. They can refer you to  lenders will be very helpful in finding the best type of loan, and also, how much of a loan you will qualify for. It is a very important first step toward finding the perfect home There should be no obligation or commentment to get this information. If you do not feel comfortable with the person you are dealing with, ask for another loan officer or go to another bank or Mortgage company. It is important that you deal with someone with whom you feel comfortable with. Our Century 21 Mortgage Company would be happy to give you all the information you would need in just one short phone call. Their toll free number is- 888-717-9694. Good luck Jessieleigh21!

The first thing you want to do is obtain a copy of your credit report at: Annual Credit Report .  This is the free site that the government has mandated the reporting agencies provide.  Review it to make sure it is correct and contact the agency to resolve any errors.

You may also want to obtain a copy of your credit score (same site) which you will have to pay for (about $15).  You will need a minimum score of about 620 to qualify for a mortgage.

Once you have done that contact a Lender in your area AND a REALTOR.  The lender will help you qualify for a mortgage.  The REALTOR will help you find homes that you qualify for and meet your needs.

You will need to put a bunch of documents together for a loan application, tax forms, income, bank statements. Most bankers have a quick qualification process. Make sure you shop several lenders at the same time, if you wait a month and then check with another lender it might show on your credit report that you pull your credit too often and that will increase your number. Once you know what you can afoord from different lenders, you will need a real estate agent and show him/her the preappoval letter you got from the bank. If you don't have a preferred lender then interview the agent that will help you find the house and they will point you to the lenders they usually feel confident with. If you need an agent I can refer you to a couple on your area. Good luck and congratulations on your decidion of buying your first home!! Yoli yvproperties.com

It is always good to start with a Realtor®. One that you like and one that you can work with.

They will have a solid lending source or two for you to visit with.

Hopefully you will be good to go first time out, but don't be discouraged, sometimes you have to have more money down or more/better credit.

Allow the Realtor® and the Lender to assist you towards home ownership.

It is a Win-Win-Win for all concerned.

Good Luck!

James Callas - Realtor®

Do you have a buyers agent working with you?  If not, interview a few to see who best matches your personality.  Usually your buyers agent will have a few lenders that they prefer to work with (because they can close the deal).
Get your preapproval and start shopping in your price range.
