I'd be more inclined to go with...
1. What do you want? What is the ideal?
2. Given that most of us cannot afford "what do you want?", add a little reality to the "want list" by identifying what are the "must haves".
3. Balance that whole list with the "what can I afford?"
Some people will sacrifice location for "want to haves". Others will sacrifice "want to haves" for location.
Unfortunately, I have seen many of the "hot locations" of the early-to-mid 2000's become today's OMG-I'm-upside-down capitals. Often, these are in what I think of as secondary markets (i.e., you can't afford what you want in X, but you can get a lot of it just a short drive away in Y).
"Location, location, location" is not a bad sound-bite, but it usually comes at a "premium, premium, premium". So, unless you have unlimited funds, what it really comes down to is "the best accomodation between wants, needs, and location".

Apnabazaar: I believe that the Socal_engr will also agree with me when I say it's location, Location and LOCATION! What did your Agent say about the Town? Regards,

Have to echo Frank's question. There are lots of houses out there. First thing you want to do is identify where you want to live, and why. Almost as important is where you don't want to live, and why. The fact that you're looking in an area and have no idea about how it meets your "checklist" should be a concern.
