A few good places to start:

"Claim your home" Zillow allows you to claim your property. You can update or correct the pertinent facts. You can write the descriptive paragraph and post pictures. (make sure they are good pictures). Study up on the "make me move" option that Zillow offers.

Consider purchasing a package from forsalebyowner.com. This allows you to have a MLS number that will be picked up by real estate search websites. remember that 85% of buyers find their home on the internet and then contact a realtor.

Make sure your home is ready to sell.

Stop by a local Title company and ask them what documentation they would need you to bring if you found a buyer. Mine had a simple non-binding (fill in the blanks) agreement. We signed a binding agreement after the buyer had the home inspection done and we had renegotiated the price and repairs. (they wanted a new roof and we split the cost)

Plan to market. Our home had been neglected, empty for a year...forclosed...was the neighborhood eyesore for a couple of years. After we set everything right we need to sell to take a job transfer. We invited the whole neighborhood (via post cards printed at Kinkos) to an open house. Everyone knows someone looking and we live in a hot market.

Study, read, research...

The fact that you do not know how to go about it without a professional real estate listing agent, sends all kind of read flags.  I suggest that you re-think your position

You can do a straight for sale by owner, or you can use a Realtor who provides the limited service of placing you in a multiple listing service. Only those with real estate licenses are able to become members of multiple listing services.

[Side note: while e public sometimes uses the term "realtor" generically, it technically refers to a person with a real estate license who has joined the National Association of REALTORS, which is a trade group that promotes the real estate industry.  However, there are real estate licensees who do not join the trade association.]
