We have seen unbelievable deals in Sw Florida- Cape Coral. Gulf access lots for under fifty thousand that were 450g in 2005.
People are strating to build now or perhaps a homes around 75-100 that are 3-5 yrs old due to the past speculation buyers pre 2005. Good Luck.

Wow! tough question without knowing how you envision how you want to spend your time during retirement. Tax consequences, cost of living, recreational facilities, access to adequate/affordable medical care, proximity to loved ones are just a few things you'll want to factor in as well as how much cash you can comfortably put down. Talking to a good tax or financial planner would be a good start.

For me I would rent 1-2 Years to be sure I like the area. Just remember it will never be cheap enough, for example you can move to Panama or Costa Rica . Good Luck

First, only you can decide what location best fits your personal needs. Second, find an honest professional REALTOR to work with, and we will do our best to put you in a great property. The Tampa Bay area offers great opportunity and great variety. We are minutes from pristine beaches, we have professional Sports, Awesome freshwater/saltwater fishing, golf courses galore, Historic Ybor City, and the I-4 corridor connects you to Disney World, Kennedy Space Center, and many more Florida treasures.

AZ, NV, NM and in the South East, Tennessee, Mississippi and 'bama are probably the cheapest states to buy in, but wherever you plan on going, you are probably better off taking your down-payment, saving it in cash and renting for a couple of years while you familiarize yourself with the area(and of course wait for the market to stabilize)

The Lake Nona area, which is the City of Orlando's southeast corner. Click on my picture and contact me if you would like to know why.

WOW, what a loaded question.
This does boil down to what you are looking for.
Remember this, I think Jefferson said it "Never buy something because it is cheap"
best of luck

What are your criteria? Are you interested in the least expensive place to live? A place where you can enjoy yourself (if so, what is "fun" for you?) A place with beaches? And arid climate?

It really depends what you like to do. South Florida has some of the best buys arround. If you like golf, the beach, etc there is no better place to buy, in today's market. If you are interested I would be happy to help you look.

I am retiring and want to buy a home in the southern US, where can I get the best bang for my buck.
