I have a Kitchen with a w/d, is that odd?

I boughten an older home (built 1953). The Kitchen is huge but also used as a laundry room also. It doesnt bother me but I am getting to the point to sell and dont know if this would look tacky or be no problem. The washer and dryer are both electric and are on the other side of the kitchen, away from any kitchen appl. and cabinets. I could move the w/d into the garage but it wouldnt be as easy to access. What can I do to improve the look or should I move the w/d?

Can you partition the laundry area? Perhaps you can build a closet with double doors that hides the W/D. I'd use the doors with slats so heat from the dryer can escape when the doors are closed. Modern washers and dryers are much quieter than earier models.

Unless you live in a temperate climate year round, an unheated garage is not the best place for a laundry. In a very cold climate, the water in the washer may partially freeze in the winter,or the clothes may take longer to dry and use more energy and up the cost of running the appliances. I can't imagine doing laundry in 20 degree temperatures with my coat, hat and gloves on to stay warm.

Don't forget that the garage laundry will displace the space used for storage and/or parking vehicles.

I have thought of making a small room in my garage and have an air duct installed to keep it cool/warm during the summer and winter seasons. I have thought of framing up a wall and doing the double door w/d closet but would that not be tacky in a kitchen?

No, I have seen it done and it just looks like a pantry or something. Sort of out of sight out of mind. The only suggestion I might make is to use good quality closet doors like louvered wood or wood raised panel doors. They paintable/stainable any color to match cabinets or blend with walls, they are easier to clean than metal, they sound proof the laundry area better and look better too. They would run about $40-50 for a 5 foot closet more than the metal ones, but they are worth it.

Try replacing the washer with a front loader, then adding countertops to match your existing over the washer and dryer. (A front-loader is at the right height for this and has no controls on top.) If you don't already have cabinetry above the w/d, add some nice looking floating shelves above it that coordinate with your cabinetry. You've suddenly expanded your worksurface linear footage, and made your laundry area look like a part of your working kitchen. This is a very common arrangement in big cities with apartments/condos, also in Europe. Market it as a "European" kitchen!

It's much more common in Europe than in the United States to have the Washing Machine in the Kitchen area (I lived in Europe for 9 years).

I thnk "scjobe" hit the nail on the head with his suggestion.

Good luck!

house built in 1933--similiar question to ztclarke above- i have a w/d/ in the kitchen (actually separated by a door frame which had swinging louvered doors)- opposite this is a bathroom door which also opens to the (master??)bedroom . i could close off that door -making the bedroom more "mastery" and do as scjobe suggested put in a front loading washer and continue the countertop of the kitchen . that little bathroom was convenient for guests because it's on the way to the backyard- one other bathroom in the house but doing it this way might make more sense. any thoughts? thanks

It can look very European to have the washer and dryer in the kitchen. I have mine in the kitchen, too. Traffic pattern-wise, it made the most sense. I have the countertop extending over the top of them (scjobe and I must have some kind of Vulcan mind-meld going.)

My w/d are front-loading with windowless fronts, so everyone thinks I'm incredibly decadent have three dishwashers. And it's cheaper than building a laundry room. If you'd like to see a photo of it, I could send one to you. The current countertops are temporary, but you can get the general idea.

I have a washer/dryer in my galley condo kitchen and they are in a closet with closet doors. I think it would be better to partition a closet for them....
