Interesting; I looked up some parcels on Fuller Seminary's campus, and their zoning does not agree with the city zoning, and their recently completed new library does not show in the database, even though the site indicates the updates occur frequently enough that the data should be there by now.

OK, I just noticed the "assessors map" has a link with the data, and that dimensions are shown.  It is not the full plot-map page, but it covers the property selected.  Works quite well.  Much better than last year!

The assessor map sheet is the same sheet that many realtors photocopy for their clients.

Thanks Hoang!  It is definitely an improvement over the last time I visited the site!

However, the property dimensions and lot area are not given, only the legal discription, thus one needs access to other sources, or needs to scale from the map.  However, the map is easy to scale from as the boundaries are clear.  And this map access lets you look at property of any zoning and with any kind of structures or no structures.

Yes, if it is listed for sale, you can always get the lot size from the listing.  And quite often realtors have access to other electronic databases, or old listings, thus can often get the data for you if you call them.  And sure, a realtor friend won't mind looking up a couple for you, or help you if you are a client that is looking to buy with them collecting the commission; but if you are collecting the data for other uses, and are not planning on buying presently; it really doesn't help to keep asking a friend to look up such things for you.

Regardless, Zillow lists most single family ownership residental lot sizes, as long as they are not empty.  You just need to go to the home details page.

But for commercial, or mixed use, or apartments, or condos, or institutional..., you need to use one of the other methods.

Every listing that my agent has pulled has the lot size on the seller notes.  You can also call the county and ask them for the information as it is public record.

Not all county tax assessor data is "on-line"; of course it is very convinent when it is.

I actually have a plot-map book for the local area that I use; slightly out of date, but sufficient for my purposes; but most people don't have that.

Our "on-line" access requires the parcel number, thus is still not convinient for most people, and only one property can be looked up at a time.  The county didn't want people using their database for mass-mailings or other privacy annoyance uses.

And as mentioned before, for odd shaped properties, I don't bother calculating by hand, I just draw the outline and have the machine tell me.  Of course dimentioned data is more accurate and easy to draw from, but that is not always readily available.

The city now uses an electronic map base prepared by the county that was scanned in that shows property boundaries.  Due to the scanner resolution, the boundaries can be up to 4 ft off in one dimention, and up to 6 ft off in the other dimention.  And due to the scanner format used, all "arcs" have been converted to stepped line-segments.  Still, I have converted their PDF maps to AutoCad and use those for measurements when I want lot size quickly, or when it is not in the plot-map book, or when boundaries have been changed.

To determine the square footage of a lot, you can find this information in the listing or in public records at the county tax appraiser office (online). A realtor can help you with this.

You will find the recorded square footage, or the lot dimensions, or the acreage.

1.  To determine square footage from lot dimensions, take the width times the length equals the total lot square footage. Example - A 75 foot wide by 100 foot length lot equals 7500 square footage lot. (75 x 100 = 7500)
2.  To determine square footage from acreage, take the acreage quantity times 43,560 (the square footage in one acre) equals the total lot square footage. Example - A .25 acre lot equals 10890 square footage. (.25 x 43,560 = 10890)

Odd size lots may need to be calculated by a surveyor, contractor, or engineer, depending on what you are needing the square footage for and to what degree of accuracy is needed.

If it has an ownership housing unit on it, it will be listed on the home details page for that housing unit.

Otherwise, it is necessary to zoom in the map, find the area of an nearby residental property, and then scale the properties off the map, taking the ratio of the area.

Programs like AutoCad help as one can trace the property than ask for the area.  I usually do a "screen capture" with the "print-screen" key, open a photo editing program, and past in from the clipboard, save the image, then in AutoCad reference in the raster image for tracing.  If I want the property properly scaled I can use the square root of the ratio of county record area to drawn area to know what scale factor to use.  But really, the property does not need to have the correct set of units if I'm only taking the ratio of one property to another, and multiiplying that by the known county record area.

Of course one could always go to the county; but that is a lot more work.
