As a contractor, when I am working on a house an want to match materials.
Best place to start is with the most local hardware store in that area, chances are you will find them there.
They may even be able to help to tell you who built the house.
Otherwise just ask a neighbor that lived around close when the house was being built, they were there and they know who built it.

A title company should be able to tell you this.  If there are CC&R's they should have some information also.

Finding out could be difficult if it could be done at all. Depending how old, if records for permits exist and if the company changed its name (as many builders do) it might be easier to find you great great grandfather.
