I'm in Portland Metro and I like Zillow. It's a tool because it advertises listings, but I really like its Uphone app. But I'd have to say the best thing about it is that it helps educate the public.
Zillow's valuations are not all that accurate, and what agents don't like is when a client or someone else insists a market analysis price is wrong because Zillow came up with a different number. That said, Zillow is PRETTY good and come close 80% of the time.

Agents that I talk to in Bend do not generally like Zillow because Bend has been hit hard by the market downturn. Many feel that Zillow is making the property values drop faster by reporting recent sales and % decreases in value, but in fact Zillow is just the messenger. Realtors in that area want to be able to control the information for their market and do not appreciate outside voices like Zillow even for straight non opinion based recently sold information.
As for websites, I use Zillow.com, truila.com, ziprealty.com, realtor.com and rmls.com most often for research on OR property. I also like city-data.com for other types of data related to neighborhoods/residential info.

Hi,
Spencer from Zillow here.
I don't know the answer specific to Bend, but I do know that a massive amount of our website's traffic comes from real estate agents. I'm sure that not all of them adore Zillow -- though most do -- but it's certain that they visit the site!

Spencer, it's Annie from the rock. So Zillow is a good recruiting tool too? Doh!

Hey Spencer
Now that Annie has asked I am also curious... is Zillow helpful in recruiting agents since Zillow receives a ton of agents traffic and is not a brokerage themself?

Jen and others,
First, full disclosure, I am not associated in ANY way with Zillow, so my remarks are my own and from my observations.
What I've learned about Zillow, in regards to what they feel produces the best value to consumers regarding Zestimates and value, is that they rely on agents "on the ground" to help give local input.
What I mean, is that values are from county records and recent sales (duh, we all know that). What I've heard agents can do, is to claim listings if it's their listing to sell and/or offer more local information, update the information on the home, etc.
I think it's called claim the listing.
At any rate, I'm not here defending Zillow. I just think there's opportunity for agents to be the local authority on their community and using Zillow's massive market reach is a great way to do it.
Are there varying opinions on Zillow. Absolutely. But judging from my interactions with them and hearing different folks speak, they really want to make it a place that helps the consumer and Zillow's David Gibbons was clear in a recent presentation at REBarcamp Seattle. Local agents on the ground can give a lot more to the story and Zillow appreciates local agents input. Ok, it's definitely paraphrased and not his EXACT words, but you get my drift... ;-)
I've been active on Activerain.com and just now getting more active on Zillow. I know my participation at Activerain has helped my credibility and authority and I know participating in Zillow's Q&A & discussions, will help that as well, no doubt. And hopefully give me more Google juice too!
I've heard rumors that an REBarcamp is being batted around for Bend, OR. Perhaps Zillow would be interested as a sponsor there?
Jen, best of luck and look forward to connecting with you online and in Bend. (I have access to a client's vacation house in Sunriver I'll be visiting in the next couple of months, so would be happy to connect in real life).
Take care and have a great Sunday!
Ed

As a real estate broker in Central Oregon, I have no problem with Zillow as long as the people using it understand that an individual property can only be accurately assessed by a licensed professional who has looked through the property itself to determine real value. Computers cannot do that.
As far as other real estate websites that I personally use, I really like ActiveRain which is used by both professionals and the public.

Zillow is a great tool to view listings, ask and answer questions regarding Real estate, and communicate with other Realtor's, however when it comes to values its not an accurate tool. Central Oregon has been hit hard, and Zillow does not do a good job reflecting actual market values of properties.

I wanted to see if real estate agents in Central Oregon thought Zillow was a helpful tool...
