It is becoming more popular all the time. In most cases Buyers ask for anywhere from 3 to 6% of the purchase price. Some lenders have a limit on how much the seller can contribute.

Whether or not a buyer asks for a seller assist just depends on what their needs are and the other factors of the offer.  Seller assists are fairly common and your Realtor should be able to give you a good idea if it's right for your deal.

To determine what percentage you are able to ask for you need to talk with your mortgage consultant.  Different mortgages allow for different levels of seller assists.
