Is there any independent organization that rates K-12 schools and provides a simple to understand rating system (e.g. stars 1 low - 5 high) with optional details if needed?

I too recommend greatschools.net, but Joshua Starr, superintendent of Stamford Schools has upgraded StamfordPublicSchools.org and it has a lot of into. You may also want to try
