Fair no. Smart no. Common yes. Out of town appraisers can be provided with fresh comps that you know of in your area that support your asking price. They should also be given information about any recent updates or repairs. 

Many out of town "bulk" appraisers are unaware of different price trends between schools or local neighborhoods so that information given to them upfront can help them do a better job.
