I guess I would have to ask a question to start.  What do you mean by worth the cost?  There are lots of benefits with a green roof.  Many of the "green" installations have a higher first cost ($) and a lower operating cost when compared with other installations.  If short term return on money is your main criteria think about other ways to spend.  If you want some of the other things in life that provide satisfaction and a sense of contribution and contectedness then look seriously at green.  Just a reminder that the least dollar with the highest return has caused many of our nation and world's problems.  Green design and living can be pretty exciting.  I designed a home with earth berms and a green roof in 1975.  My clients still love it!
