Is it more cost effective to convert a 1 car garage into a home office, or add on a small extension?

Yes, to answer your question, its very reasonable to convert an existing garage into useable office/rec space.  You should ensure that its easy to swap back to a garage as Brian Gwaltney said, "it looks pretty ghetto". When and if you  put your house on the market, convert it back to a garage.  My suggestion is to do it simply and modestly.

Garage conversions are a huge negative on resale here too.  Generally if we go in to list a house with a garage conversion and it's easy to undo, we advise our clients to convert it back to a garage even if the home is only 800 sq ft without it.

Garage remodels always look pretty ghetto to me.  I've never seen one that was done right.

Only convert your garage if you have the ability to also build a larger garage on the property. Check with your local building inspections office to make sure it is even possible to convert a garage to living space.

No garage can make a house extremely difficult to sell, and you take a hit on the overall value of the home, sometimes the hit is more than the cost of building a basic garage.

In most areas, having a functioningg garage is far more beneficial to resale than no garage at all.
