There will be "wet signatures" required on many documents, but you could potentially use a Power of Attorney depending on your situations. For example I had a VA loan where the client was still over seas so his wife was granted Power of Attorney. 9 out of 10 times though you will be required to sign on the dotted line.

I am not sure about actually closing online because there are some loan documents that need to be notarized, but you can certainly do pretty much everything else electronically

You can do just about everything on line. As for closing it, you can do it from your house or anywhere else if proper arrangements are made. Or, give power of attorney to another and have them sign for you.

I've handled a few "blind" seller/buyer deals where anonimity was desired.....

Well said, and I agree.  You can do almost all of it without appearing in person; however the closing docs will be mailed to you for your signature.  There is another alternative and that is giving someone power of attorney to sign for you or hiring an attorney in fact to take care of your transfer.

I do not think you can close a house online, but you certainly can find a home online.  You can then negotiate via email or eFax, make your offer using electronic signatures and wire your money to the attorney/title company.  Chances are the title company will have to overnight the final closing docs to you for signature but since they will have to be notarized you will have to sign and return.  You can pretty much do everything necessary to purchase a home without ever leaving your bedroom if that is your goal.

However, I think it might not be the best idea to purchase a home "sight unseen" or work with companies that you have had no contact with other than via the internet.  Seems too risky for me.
