It only becomes a matter of public record towards the very end.
If you are under a lease, you have some rights to continue to the end of your lease per federal law but you do have to be current on payment of rend.

I don't know where you are located, but there are services that provide notices of default and pending foreclosures. A title rep may be able to help you with this information or you can check with your local Realtor. He or she will most likely call their Title Rep. Another method is a paid service called ForeclosureRadar.com. I hope this helps?
