Is it weird that I wouldn't be able to view an apartment for rent before signing the agreement?

I contacted someone who posted an apartment for rent. He says he is now in California and I wouldn't be able to see the apartment unless I enter the lease. How can I tell that this is a real apartment that is being offered? I imagine I'll have to pay the deposit fee before I even actually see the apartment. I love the pictures he's provided and the location is great but it sounds to good to be true.

This sounds like a scam.  Is "Belltown" in Seattle.  Whats the address I can look it up.

Seems to me that scammers are pretty clever, so they make their offerings pretty attractive so .... perhaps you don't want to believe, but then you believe and send them some money.    They chuckle all the way to their bank and then start fishing for the next one.

Yes! As a general rule, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Arrclaro, This is very abnormal. How many other people do you think he is doing this to and what makes your sure that he even is the owner or is able to rent the property to you. With out seeing the property there is to much risk in proceeding with the lease. If the owner provides you with access and more reassurance stay away. Good luck.

Arrclaro,

My opinion is this is definitely a scam.  As the people below said, don't give them any money but even MORE important is don't fill out any paperwork.  I use to think they were after the money but they are not.  They are after your personal information so they can commit ID theft. Think of the information we give on a rental application!  My guess is that if you look the address up it would be for sale.  That way they can use all the photos that we, as agents, post to sell our listings.  It makes it look much more legit plus it shows a beautiful home so that some may be tempted to "rent" it prior to actually getting in and seeing it.  If your tummy tells you something is too good to be true, it probably is. Best of luck to you in your quest!

This is obviously a scam. It is not rational for someone to lease you an apartment without first seeing it. Please flag this listing and please do not give them any of your personal information.

Have you taken the time to read the FAQ on scams and internet fraud?   It is linked at the top of every rental listing.  It describes exactly the situation you describe.

Please do not give this person any of your money or sign an agreement! This is a scam that is becoming more and more common. Never should you give money to anyone before seeing an apartment or signing a lease, unless it's a small application fee. Listen to your guy...if it seems too good to be true, it is probably a scam.
