I think that would be relative to the area in which you are accustomed. Baton Rouge received a large influx of people following Hurricane Katrina, and that drove housing prices up. I think they've started coming down somewhat, but it is a very busy city. I would think the outlying communities such as Gonzalez might be less expensive.

We are finding a lot of people coming to North Carolina to retire, we still get seasons but the winters are not harsh, long springs, long falls. The Raleigh area is 2.5 hours to the beach, same to the mountain. Lots of walking/biking paths, great theatre, good network of freeways, fantastic shopping, centrally located on the eastern seaboard, this area is constantly getting accolades, like 'best city to live in, best place to retire, etc,
there are also dedicated 55 plus communities here, so if Baton Rouge doesnt work out for you, consider our area, we would love to have y'all!

You might try comparing the area with another one that you are familiar with by using a site like neighborhood scout or Sperlings.

Is the Baton Rouge area an inexpensive area to retire?
