Is the "government rate" the same as the VA loan rate?

Profile picture for 1stymhmbuyer
I was given a good faith estimate on properties that I was interested in looking at and was told by my lender that they had locked me in at the "government rate," which I'm assuming is the same as the VA loan rate?  I'm kinda confused because when last checked on the VA loan today it was at 5.0% but I was locked in at 5.3 something.  They said it's just in case of a worst case scenerio.

Vet to vet......I don't understand the terminolgy being used here, "government rate". No such thing exist in the mortgage industry. The government does not set rates. The rate sounds high either way you say it. Sounds like the loan officer is trying to upsell your interest rate at the blame of the government. With a VA loan thats to far down the road, you may be trapped into using the lender. Just depends where you are in your process. To see the real market rate for a VA mortgage, put a request in here at zillow.
