The number is the thread number, giving some clue as to order and date created.
It disappeared when Zillow changed the map bases from Google to Bing. Actually, I think it disappeared about a year prior to that, but when people have asked about it in the past, there was an indication that Zillow wanted to bring them back, but that it for some reason was much more complicated with Bing. I have no clue why.
Actually, there are two separate heat maps that people have expressed interest in; the one that was on the site was median estimated value range, with the higher value range being the redder colors. I think the other one that interest was expressed in was sales volume, but I have forgotten. I would actually like to see one for foreclosure saturation density too.

It hasn't available for a while, but I do not know why Zillow took it off. I miss it too.

That's been gone for awhile. There wasa discussion long ago about it. I will see if I can find old discussion and provide link if Asian_orange doesn't reply. He had a lot of comments about that feature as I remember
