I would suggest that you choose the best lawyer rather than a law firm.  Avvo (www.avvo.com) rates every lawyer in Oregon and also has a question and answer forum for lending and any other legal issues.

Give it a try!

Dr. Quin,

If you're trying for a loan modification, you will probably want to get legal advice at some point, but your first step is to call your lender's loss mitigation department and ask for a loan modification yourself. It's free. After the lender writes up the agreement, you'll want to get legal as well as tax advice.

If you've already gone past this point and have not had any luck working with your lender, then it's a different situation and you may want professional help. You can find the legal expertise you need on the state bar website.

For information on loan modifications, short sales, foreclosures, deficiency judgments, etc., have a look at the Mortgage Rescue Cafe website.

Good luck with this, and congratulations for taking it as seriously as you seem to be doing. Lots of people don't even try.
