Is there a website that would list the mortgage on a property?

As a realtor, I think that showing what is left on someone's mortgage should remain private. It would be the same as showing what is in their bank account. Hopefully we don't start showing that information. It sounds to me like you are trying to buy a home and want to figure out how low to offer to cover their mtg? Your realtor should be able to do a pretty strong guesstimate. Sometimes, simply asking the other side, will help.Try that? Good luck,

You can go to the Wake County Register of Deeds and click on Books Real Estate Search.  You would have to know the appropriate type of document (Deed of Trust) and then have to enter the particular grantor/grantee info.  But through this, you can find out the original amount of the mortgage.  Digging deeper, you can find out if any DoT has been cancelled, thus meaning that the home has been refi'd.  Doing a little math, you can even figure out if the loan was FHA, Conventional, USDA etc.

Or, a local Realtor can get this info to you in a much quicker time frame using a program called Realist - which mines public information.

You will never find out the balance of the mortgage, but you may be able to come close by using simple calculations.

Even though this is public information held on County Records, there is no current website offering this type of information.  A good Real Estate Agent will be able to assist you with your research on a property (they have access to this type of information) and can assist you with your offers.

it depends on state/ county, some are on line, some you have to call the clerk's office. Just check the land records for your county.

Well I beg to differ, the purchase price of the property is on the county website, but doesn't necessarily mean this is mortgage or initial mortgage. The property could have been paid in cash, no mortgage.  But I am not certain of this fact.

One of the few things that isn't in public domain (yet?) is the amount owed on a mortgage, although the initial amount is available.

Bo is about right.  The County Clerk records the deed and mortage, the latter will reflect the initial mortage amount.  This is public domain.

The only thing you could find out about the mortgage is what the amount was when purchased or last time it was refinanced. You could ask a realtor or mortgage professional in your area to acquire this for you. You could probably also purchase this from a title company or from your county recorders office.

Happy funding, Rudi

I know that you can look for the Deed of Trust filed at the County by the Lender.  I do not know off the top of my head if it includes the AMOUNT of the lien.  I wonder - why would this information be of value?  If there's a specific home, then your Realtor would be able to find out the last mortgage filed quite easily.
