Your best "hope" is that you can raise your credit scores by continuing to be responsible with your loans/payments/etc. While it may be frustrating now, the hits on your credit diminish with time and good current credit history.

Good credit or bad credit, there is always a way to get financing.  The only real variable is going to be at what interest.

Your best bet is to set up meetings with multiple lenders and have them talk to you about what they have to offer based off of your current situation.   Like any other business, lenders are in competition.  With a poor credit score, they won't have as many options available for you, but even if they aren't in a position to loan you money right now, they can put you on the right path to making yourself a prime candidate for their preferred lending programs.

Coryns place,
As you see there are several options to try. Working with a Realtor to get set up with someone to get you financed is a good place to start,

It sounds like you are in credit prison just like millions of other consumers here in America. To say that all credit repair services are rip-offs is just like saying that all mortgage companies are predatory. I would suggest that you consider solving your credit problem first if that is the main and only reason for your being unqaulified for a loan. Sometimes there are compensating factors which could be considered with regard to obtaining a mortgage. As Ms Garcia said, there could be inaccuracies in your report which could easily be removed helping your score, but don't think that because you pay off certain debts that your score will automatically go up. It could do just the opposite and hurt your credit. It is almost always prudent to have a professional help so as to not do further damage to your credit by trying to do the right thing.

The best approach is always to look at your report closely.  There might be inaccuracies and some easy things to do to improve your score.
Then you need to make a plan to keep your scores up and saving in you accounts.

Yes. There is plenty of hope.
When my wife and I got together, her credit was DISMAL (560 or so).

One by one we took care of each item on her report, then we opened a low-limit credit card in her name. After two years of dilligence, her score was up to the high-600's, almost 700.

If your "young and dumb" mistakes are still on your credit report, learn what you can do to improve your credit, take those steps, and mean while save, save and save some more so you can afford a down payment and a slush fund.

Instant gratification doesn't happen in credit repair.  (Do not hire someone to repair your credit, it is a waste of money)

Yes, lending standards are more restrictive now and credit will be an issue if you want to get decent terms. I am sure there are some lenders that will still lend to a subprime customer but do you really want to get stuck with bad loan terms? Plus there is no rush in buying a home now, prices will not sky rocket as before. If I were you I would focus on improving your credit score first. And save for a down payment/ closing costs.
