I agree with Derek. The area your looking in is of great importance. Many agents are familiar with a certain area. Drive around see which agents in the area you like have a lot of listings. These will be most familiar with that area. Good luck.

Every Realtor has access to a certain MLS pertaining to their area of work. Depending on how big that area is, they should have a decent grasp of that whole area, at least enough to know if it's good or bad. We pay fees to have this access so anyone that is willing to pay for it, I would hope has some sort of knowledge of the area.

In fact all professional Realtors® will always refer clients to and partner with a local agent or broker if the client is looking for property outside their area of expertise. Local agents will often pay the referring agent a fee or split of their commission for providing a quality, qualified, ready to buy client.

Local agents are more likely to know the area (good and bad), and are more likely to have relationships with other agents/brokers who list property there (meaning you'll have a better chance at getting the house you make an offer on). We are experts in our area and know many of the other top agents/agencies... which means we can ask each other for a favor now and then.

YES! And there isn't much more that can be said besides what the others have already mentioned. A local agent is always the best answer to gaining an advantage in a local market!! Quite simply, they know more than an outside agent. Period.

We sell a lot of second homes in this area. Buyers often come to open houses not only to look at the property but to find an agent who they feel is knowledgeable and they connect to. Local realtors will know the local municipal requirements for a transaction that an out of area agent may not be aware of.

Absolutely! Ask to see their website for current listings and client reviews. Ask how many homes they have sold in the area in the last 12 months. Go to the CA DRE website to view their record and years licensed. Lot's of great Realtors out there, but do your homework!

It absolutely is. Who better knows the area than a local Realtor? They are familiar with all the areas where homes are for sale; the communities if you have interest in a specific area, specific amenities that are important to you, etc. Someone from out of the area most likely won't have that knowledge or details and may not be as helpful to you as a local Realtor.
