Legal to park an RV in the street in Los Angeles?

Profile picture for JenLJL
The beautiful city view from our newly purchased home in the 9008 (Baldwin Hills) section of Los Angeles is blocked by an RV that is in complete disrepair. It sits on the street and never moves. It belongs to one of the other homeowners on the block, and they refuse to move it. What can we do? Is there some code against this?

Sharon is right, call you Baldwin Hills and talk to city ordinances.Perhaps the owners need to know where and how much storage units are. Get them that information, it might be helpful.

@ Risa - If they actually move the vehicle regularly, there's not much anyone can do.

How it works is: You call in the report (or report it on the website). They sent a parking control officer to note the location of the vehicle. Several days or a week later they'll pop a ticket on it if it still hasn't been moved. Another few days, another ticket, and then they'll come tow it.

You have to be especially persistent with LADOT.

I would keep calling it in every three days, so that they have to move it or it gets towed. I had an RV in my old neighborhood that was an eye sore and was leaking unknown substances into the surface water. Every three days, I emailed code enforcement to get it tagged for towing. After 3 weeks, the owners got sick of moving it and they found somewhere else to park it. Hooray.

Most cities have laws against vehicle storage on the street and about abandoned vehicles in general. I would call your local government and see which department handles complaints like this, then be persistent.

Jen, droopyd cited LADOT regulations and he is correct. Unfortunately, I've seen people move unused vehicles several times per week in an attempt to get around them. I hope our answers have helped. Following is the link to LADOT: http://ladot.lacity.org/tf_Parking_regulations.htm

In the City of LA, a car cannot remained parked on a city street for more than 72 hours or it is considered "abandoned."

Cal 311 to get it towed, or better yet call LADOT directly and ask for your local parking enforcement office.

Jen, Sharon is right. For example, the City of Burbank recently passed an ordinance regarding the parking of RVs. At this point, I don' believe there is an ordinance prohibiting it in the City of Los Angeles so, yes, it's best to call your local PD and explain the situation. If it's not street legal, that may help your cause. Sorry about the frustration. Good luck!

In certain areas it is. Call the local police and ask them. There might be city ordinances in place for Baldwin Hills.
