"West Knoxville" covers a lot of real estate. It runs from the Sequoyah Hills area out to Cedar Bluff. Some people even include Farragut under the heading of West Knoxville.
Ranchers were very popular in the late 50's to mid 70's so it stands to reason that larger numbers of them would be located in area developed during that time. As far as West Knoxville goes that would be the area beginning around Papermill Road and moving out to deep Cedar Bluff. The areas moving towards Farragut began to develop in the late 70's when ranchers began to decline in popularity. They are some there but you have to know where to look.
I'd suggest that you find an agent that you feel comfortable with and let him/her do the looking for you. Agents are professional house hunters. We do this every day and are familiar with which areas would meet your needs. And of course, a buyer's agent services are usually paid for from the seller's side so that makes them free to you.
Hope this helps.
