You may want to consider a yurt, or more traditional teepee depending on the region of the country that you live. You'll only need sufficient yard space.
Otherwise, you should be looking for the following key words:
"in-law"
"garden apartment"
"related living"
"additional living"
"multi-unit"
"two flat"
"three flat"
"duplex"
"triplex"
"finished basement/attic with bathroom, and reverse deadbolt"

I just read an article that was saying that so many people either have elderly parents or grown children moving in with them that the house-with-in-a-house you describe is one of the biggest home building trends. So, I am thinking it will certainly be possible to find or get what you need. Here is a link to the article.

In answer to your question, I would suggest a knowledgeable real estate agent's help. I would also search for the key terms "mother in law suite," "rental," and "apartment." In the right home, a renovation or an addition might be the answer. Or, of course, you may consider building, depending on your needs. Good luck, I hope our children are as generous and thoughtful when that day comes!

That depends: can you clarify what "separate space" would mean for you and your family? Does it mean: 1. Mother-in-law apartment? 2. private/separate entrance into their area of the home? 3. A completely detached structure on the property? Would they want a kitchen area or just their own bedroom/bath/living area? There are several ways to search for that using the Denver MLS searching tools. Each website is different. there was great mother-in-law apartment in a property in Skyline estates that was completely remodeled...I'm not for sure if it's available. Let me know if you would like for me to find some options for you. Nicki

There are 7 active listings in Arvada. I searched for "mother" in the remarks section.

I would think the listing would indicate if the home had space suitable as an "in-law" suite..............my MLS even has a specific space for that.
Of course, the easiest thing to do is find an agent to work with.....and have them send you appropriate listings.
That's part of the job!!
Good luck!
